High Voltage Spark Gap-Switches

Spark gap switches are characterized by several key electrical and mechanical performance parameters that determine their suitability for a given application. These include the operating voltage range, maximum peak current, maximum charge transfer per discharge, inductance, and design shot life. For optimal performance and minimum timing jitter, switches should generally be operated between 60% and 100% of their maximum rated voltage. The specified shot life is based on operation at maximum rated voltage, current, and charge transfer, though service life can often be extended by operating below these limits.
Switch performance is also influenced by operating conditions and triggering requirements. Full-voltage operation typically requires an external insulating environment such as SF₆ gas or mineral transformer oil, while dry internal dielectric gas and proper gas exchange are required for reliable operation. Internal gas pressure determines the switch’s voltage holdoff capability and must be selected according to the manufacturer’s pressure-versus-voltage guidelines. Proper trigger electrode biasing and a trigger pulse of opposite polarity, with an amplitude of approximately 70–100% of the maximum operating voltage and a fast rise time, are necessary to achieve the specified switching performance.
